Meta Unveils Standalone AI App to Compete with ChatGPT

Meta has officially launched a standalone artificial intelligence assistant powered by its Llama model, directly positioning itself against OpenAI’s ChatGPT and other leading AI platforms. The move marks a significant step in Meta’s aggressive AI expansion strategy.

Llama-Powered App Targets AI Chatbot Market

The new app, simply branded as Meta AI, is built on Meta’s proprietary Llama AI architecture. It features a “Discover” feed that showcases user interactions and offers prompt suggestions — aiming to boost engagement and usability. This standalone version builds on Meta’s September 2023 launch of its chatbot assistant integrated into Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and Messenger.

In April, Meta replaced the traditional search bar in its core apps with the AI assistant interface, signaling its central role in the company’s user experience going forward.

Meta Enters Crowded Field of AI Assistants

Meta’s app joins a growing list of consumer-facing AI tools, including Google’s Gemini, Anthropic’s Claude, and Elon Musk’s Grok by xAI. Each platform is racing to dominate a rapidly expanding market for generative AI assistants capable of responding, reasoning, and even creating on demand.

CEO Mark Zuckerberg previously projected that 2025 would be the breakthrough year when a personalized AI assistant reaches over 1 billion users — and he expects Meta AI to lead that charge.

Strong User Base and Massive AI Investment Plans

Meta AI had already reached 700 million monthly active users by January, according to CFO Susan Li — a jump from 600 million in December. The company is also investing up to $65 billion in AI infrastructure this year, underlining its long-term ambitions in artificial intelligence.

This week, Meta is hosting its first-ever LlamaCon developer event at its Menlo Park headquarters, promoting its Llama family of models and aiming to attract third-party developers to build on its platform.

Eyes on Q1 Earnings as AI Rollout Accelerates

The standalone app’s launch comes just ahead of Meta’s Q1 earnings announcement. Investors will be closely watching for signs that Meta’s massive AI investments are translating into revenue growth, platform engagement, or both.

Can Meta AI Become the World’s Leading Digital Assistant?

With billions poured into infrastructure, cross-app integration, and now a dedicated app, Meta is betting heavily that it can outpace rivals in the AI race. But can it deliver on its vision of becoming the default digital assistant for over a billion users?
