Russell Westbrook, point guard for the Denver Nuggets, has introduced a new venture called Eazewell that leverages AI funeral planning to simplify the burdensome process of end-of-life arrangements. Co-founded with former NBA player Kemba Walker and longtime friend Donnell Beverly Jr., the platform aims to help families through one of life’s most difficult moments.
AI Platform Streamlines Funeral Logistics and Emotional Burdens
Los Angeles-based Eazewell uses artificial intelligence to tailor funeral options to a user’s preferences and budget. Beyond ceremonies, the tool helps manage paperwork, invitations, budgeting, and overlooked tasks like canceling utilities or social media accounts. It features a voice-activated AI agent that can contact funeral homes on behalf of users, offering what the company calls “empathetic automation.”
Personal Losses Inspired the Startup’s Mission
Eazewell’s origin traces back to the high school years of Westbrook and Beverly, who lost a close friend and teammate unexpectedly. The idea matured after Beverly navigated complex funeral planning for his own parents in 2016 and 2023, describing the experience as “grueling” and “messy.” That pain led the founders to create a solution focused on compassion and simplicity.
Startup Gains Momentum Without Ads or Outside Funding
The company has tested its beta platform with over 1,000 families and currently employs 11 staff members. Though it hasn’t disclosed funding, Eazewell has already signed revenue-sharing agreements and is in talks with life insurance and finance partners. The service is free to use and currently ad-free, with future monetization left open-ended.
With AI funeral planning evolving, can tech platforms like Eazewell humanize one of life’s most difficult decisions — and reshape an industry long resistant to change?
